Lose gold for platinum?

By leahcimabi | Oct 22, 2018, 05:55 PM

Arvo all,

We were gold status for this year, and as soon as it flicked into the new review year (Sept) we travelled. Our new review date is Sept 2019, but we have already achieved our 600 SC requirements to maintain Gold. So thinking that when Sept 2019 comes around, we have already hit the mark so that will cover us from 2019 to 2020. 2 weeks after achieving the Gold status, we clicked over into the Platinum Level with 2 days remaining on the Platinum review date. We now have 8 sectors and 800SC to maintain by Oct 2019, but I don't think we will be travelling this year (due to selling up and moving). Sooo... the question is - because we had already achieved Gold (up to Sept 2020) and now have platinum (up to Oct 2019), if we don't travel do we lose it all? Or will it revert back to Gold as we had already achieved what we had to? Hope it makes sense. Cheers

I also had this question which was answered by Brandon Loo earlier in the month:

It's not an officially publicised benefit, but yes currently you would get one full year of Platinum, and have a 'soft landing' to one year of Gold if you failed to maintain Platinum.

When Gold, you'd have one year to maintain it (400 SC + 4 flights), earn back Platinum (1000 SC + 8 flights), or you'd have a 'soft landing' down to Silver and so on.

So even if you do no flying you will get Platinum to Oct 2019 then Gold to Oct 2020 (unless Virgin changes their T&C's in the meantime).

Hope this helps :)

Hi,

Bit puzzled. But I think this is what you want to know:

When you achieve platinum on that date your annual review date will become that date. So as soon as you achieve it you than have 12 months to retain it.

If you don't retain platinum you will then drop down to gold.

Yeah sorry, was a bit convoluted.

JCH - thanks for the info on the old thread.

Bagpuss - I know we wont hit platinum again in the next 12 months. But if we don't travel at all, ie 0 SC, will it put us down to Gold or back to Red?

From what I understand:

- You maintained Gold in September 2018, meaning it should be renewed during September 2019

- You then achieved Platinum in October 2018

In this case, the rest of your original Gold period is gone, and now you've started a new Platinum membership cycle from October 2018 to October 2019.

As you don't plan to travel much in the next 12 months, then come this time next year, you should have a soft landing back to Gold, from October 2019 to October 2020. You'll still get Platinum benefits for a one-month period afterwards, until November 2019.

I checked the Velocity T's & C's, and in fact, it actually is a published benefit:

  • 22.6.1 If the total number of Status Credits earned and Eligible Sectors flown at a Member’s Review Date does not meet the criteria in clause 22.1.4 to maintain their current Membership Level, then the Member’s Membership Level will be downgraded to the Membership Level below their current Membership Level.

  • 22.6.2 In respect of any adjustment to a lower Membership Level, a Member will continue to enjoy the Member Benefits of their previous Membership Level for a one month grace period.

Either way, your platinum will get dropped back down to gold regardless of what you earn if you do not requalify and then after another year of gold, you will be dropped to silver regardless of how much you travel.
