Qantas business class or Thai first class to Bangkok

By Husk | Mar 23, 2019, 06:46 PM

Hi, we travel to Bangkok every year with Qantas in Business. Looking at the dates we want to travel there is not much difference in price between the 2 fares at the moment. Is it worth paying a bit extra for Thai First as there are no QF deals at the moment for travel in the next 3 months whereas Thai price seems consistent?

We have flown many times on new (and old) Qantas A330 business and as nice as it is the food is usually average/bad on the Qantas Bangkok flights, crew is usually great, so is it worth the extra for the first experience on Thai? We love the whole travel experience and lounges would be a consideration in the decision. I understand it is an older product on Thai but love the 747 on Qantas on our trips to Japan so happy to fly that aircraft. We have never flown any first class.

We are Qantas Gold so would also join the Thai FF program and start to make some progress with Star Alliance? Does that even add any value to the decision? Maybe even move our overseas travel plans based on this in the future.

Have watched you tube reviews for Thai First and they seem to be 50/50?

Appreciate any thoughts and feedback.

Thanks

If you have never flown First I would say definitely go for it, for the experience. Who knows when the next opportunity will arise, especially the chance to fly First in the nose of a 747 before they are all gone. The service and F&B will be great, you’ll feel like a minor royal in BKK and it’ll definitely add a bit of adventure and wow factor to the trip.

Definitely try THai First, yes an older product but hence the competitive fare. One thing you will certainly notice is the huge step up is service and general care factor of the Thai crews. Enjoy!

Thanks eminere but the EK arrival of 1.40am is not attractive and the fare price is the driver here. Cheers

I would fly F. You say you enjoy the travel experience and flying on the 747, and there's nothing more special than flying in the nose of the 747. Thai are changing the 747's to A350's for Sydney too, so it's a good chance to get in before it's too late.

F on Thai. Thai has probably the best First service in the world. And the ground experience departing from BKK in F is superb.

I’ve done both to bkk - definitely thai first. Seat is much bigger and more spacious, nose of 747, SQ first lounge in Sydney, dom perignon and caviar, buggy to take you around bkk and escorted immigration, spa massage.

Go for Thai F - for the experience of F, 747 seats and the sheer luxury the comes w/ Thai hospitality.

And join the Thai FF program - I'm sure your status w/ skyrocket quickly as you're doing F tickets or check for other *A programs that give you quicker ascent into the Elite levels (Gold, Diamond, Platinum and the likes). Also be aware that different FF programs have different crediting tables

On a side note :

I've flown Thai J and Y a few times and I think the crew connect well amongst themselves and with the customers on their flights.

In J, I loved the food choices (being an Indian Veg.) I had limited but well made choices to try. I'm sure their F menu will only be a step upwards from J and Y

Thanks for your feedback everyone. I do have 1 concern and that is I have seen there are 2 cabins - newish F and old F. I have flown the Qantas old F seat to Tokyo (sold as business) so hoping not to get that similar layout on the Thai flight. Do you know if first preference for SYD-BKK is new fit out or is it purely a gamble..understand no aircraft is guaranteed up to the day of travel but is the usual plane the newer seat with 9 up front instead of 10?
