The change is only temporary due to IT issues, apparently. United bookings on TAP Air Portugal are also currently offline.

As a Brisbane resident myself with a few United miles to spend, it's rather unfortunate, because as you say, it really reduces the options for doing so (especially to Asia and Europe) until the problem is fixed. Thai had the best availability through United, SQ was reasonable in economy although the A350 premium cabins weren't available, which leaves only EVA Air (which releases very few reward seats), Air Canada (a very long way to fly to Europe, and also not a lot of reward seats) and AirNZ (again, not much availability, and many flights are all-economy).

Then there's Air China, but that's only a seasonal service to Beijing, and United miles can be used for bookings on Hawaiian too, but United doesn't see most of the premium cabin rewards that Hawaiian offers, so the practically is limited.

All in all, I do wish SQ and Thai would come back online sooner rather than later!
