ANA launches direct flights between Perth and Tokyo from Sept 2019

ANA launches direct flights between Perth and Tokyo from Sept 2019

ANA will launch direct daily flights between Perth and Tokyo from 1 September 2019, unlocking another premium Asian destination for Western Australian travellers.

The daily Boeing 787 service will also open up ANA's extensive domestic network throughout Japan as well as destinations further afield, including in Europe and the USA.

The Star Alliance member's 184-seat Boeing 787-8 will take on the 10-hour flight and sees business class passengers happily ensconced in one of 32 personal suites with an alternating 1-2-1 and 1-1-1 layout...

The unique 1-2-1 and 1-1-1 arrangement sees four 'throne seats' on the Boeing 787-8

... with each seat turning into a fully-flat bed.

The convenient overnight service of NH882 will depart Perth at 9:45pm to reach Tokyo's Narita airport 8:25am the following day.

The southbound NH881 leg will be wheels-up from Tokyo at 11:10am, arriving into Perth at 8:15pm.

Passengers will be able to stay connected via ANA's inflight WiFi, which is priced at US$6.95 (A$10) for 30 minutes, US$16.95 (A$24) for three hours and US$21.95 (A$30) for the entire flight.

While travellers will be able to earn frequent flyer miles in ANA's Mileage Club scheme, the airline's Star Alliance membership also provides the ability to earn and redeem miles on ANA flights with fellow Star Alliance partners such as Singapore Airlines.

This new route comes eight years after Qantas scrapped its Perth-Tokyo flights, which were flown by the ageing Boeing 767s; ironically, this is around the same time that ANA became the Boeing 787's launch customer.

ANA's only other Australian route is Sydney-Tokyo, while Oneworld rivals Japan Airlines and Qantas both fly Sydney-Tokyo and Melbourne-Tokyo.

QF dominates Aus-Japan traffic so this should be welcomed to invite healthy competition.

Terrible news for couples traveling business. I was hoping for a 787-9 service but instead, they have decided on the smaller 787-8. The barrier between the business class seats on this aircraft does not allow communication between couples.

I expect ANA will upgrade to the larger 787-9 once the route proves itself.

This is great news, and a daily service right off the bat instead of the usual and more cautious 3-4 days per week. Well done ANA!

Some would argue the privacy is exactly what business travelers as want. And frankly on occasions couples too!

For couples that don't get ! 😀 Actually, I do quote a youtube reviewer called Denis. I think he might be from Perth. I watch good videos frequently. He also remarked how isolating the so-called couple seats are. I think he was traveling on the 787-9 from Sydney, and on this aircraft the 787-8, it's even more private. Like you said, good for business people who want privacy, but not so for couples. 😣

I think many will disagree. You move your seat forward and have a little chat, you make it work. Surely you are no going to chat nonstop for 10 hours? (great for the other passengers).

I think its fine and couples survive this every day ;-).

Wow, AusBT, when you said you'd be around to cover news even during the Christmas to New Year period, you guys meant it! This good news, interesting but sensible to see ANA sidestep Melbourne which is already serviced by Qantas and JAL, and open up Perth instead. Really smart!

Good on NH for taking the risk here by jumping straight to daily, assuming they've researched the O&D/PDEW for the PER-NRT route. Taking into consideration they have minimal to no connections on the PER end (NH does have third party interline agreements with QF and VA).

It'll be interesting to see the yields for the PER-NRT route in 6 months time.

For my holiday trips in Y, SQ do day time in both directions using HND. ANA’s direct service would need to be sharply priced for me to change.

When in flat bed mode, how long are the beds on their 788’s?

There's a lot of legroom in ANA business. However, the width of the seats are only 19.7 inches, which is premium economy standard. Most business class seat widths are from 21-23 inches, with the exception of SQ, which are 34 I believe. Also, the seen to be 3 classes in business for this aircraft. Those so-called throne seats in the middle, have the most room, with side tables on each side, followed by the window seats with a side table, and the least attractive, the 'couple seats', that actually share 1 side table, with a very private divider that prevents any communication or contact whatsoever.

Most welcome for the flyers in Perth. As well as for the badly aging airport, which needs more landing/takeoff fees for desperately needed airport renovations, especially the surface condition of PER's runways and taxiways which are on par with those in some third world countries! A disgrace, shameful.

You're talking out of your rear. The runways have been resurfaced, new taxiways and aprons constructed, and the airport is arguably the best for passenger experience in Australia after a $1bn invested in terminal upgrades, so don't elude for one second that your claim, of these haven't been done, is putting off airlines. Keep your opinions on topic.

It's a shame that it wasn't JAL who ended up flying this route, as they have a much nicer 2-4-2 economy layout for their 787s. Still great news for Perth, though!

Doesn't look like these flights are available for booking just yet. Anyone know when they'll be released?

I can't believe there's only one cabin for economy, with the rest of the aircraft taken up by business and two rows of premium economy,

South bound will not give a lot of connection to other parts of Australia but it's a good direct sevice. ANA have their east cost flight but this is not a god back up option from Tokyo to the other airports.
