It's black and white: Air New Zealand's fleet-wide facelift

Following the popularity and "hey, look at that!" recognition of its all-black All Black "Crazy About Rugby" planes, Air New Zealand will repaint its entire fleet in black and white.

It's a reverse version of the special rugby paint job for Virgin Australia's trans-Tasman partner – with a white body, black tail (containing the airline's signature koru glyph) along with chic new lettering for the Air New Zealand name itself.

But don't worry: the airline will be keeping its special all-black jets too.

If you haven't come across one of the sleek, black-bodied jets in NZ, at an Australian airport during one of their occasional runs across the Tasman, or further afield at LAX or London Heathrow, we'll confirm that they're seriously impressive.

    Seems a bit boring.... Since Air New Zealand usually seem to have quite forward thinking ideas this certainly isn't one of them.

    Off topic.  Did you notice Air New Zealand's position on the Skytrax top 100. I was very surprised at their ranking.  I think they were down at # 17.

    As a designer, I understand most design concepts. White is pure, white is clean and airlines love to have that. Black, it stands out over the white and that is essential for company names and logos. Too many elements aren't good for this. My team got a bit worried when they saw the Boeing 787 when it released its livery to us. There were so many elements on one single plane crammed into a spot.

    The new design is simple (which is what designers are looking at) and modern but it is just a splash of black and white and that is something that isn't attractive but now everyone will recognise that this is the airline of the All-blacks which AirNZ spends a lot of money promoting that.

    It definitely isn't the best design but it is better than what we currently think.
